A Moment Of Terror

This weekend I replaced my old server with a nice new and very powerful server. Everything was going well. Althought I had hoped to keep the old server online while building the new one, I had to take the old one off line because I needed a couple cards out of it. But all in all, the change over went rather well.

Today I was putting a couple final touches on the system and my main data drive shut down and stop responding! I can't believe my data drive bit the dust!

Ok, not a really big deal, I have a backup drive that is updated every night. BUT WAIT! NO! I loaned out that drive last month and forgot to hook it back up when I got it back!

Ok, I can deal with that. One month of data lost. But NO!!!! I formatted that drive before I loaned it out! OH MY GOSH! Years of data gone in the blink of an eye. Now I just want to die. To heck with it I will never put the server back online. I quit. I just don't care any more! Fu$#*%@!! Cra*%&$! Muth%$&#*@#$%%#!)!!!!!

Oh, wait what is that?

Oh my gosh again! What an idiot! The USB cable had come loose! It was plugged in just enough for the computer to see the drive but not enough to talk to the drive properly.

What a total scare. I took the server off line and connected up my backup drive to do a full backup. Taking the server off line make the backup go faster. It only took 2 hours to do a full backup of 98 gig of data. Doing the backup with the server online would take about 5 hours because the data drive would be getting used and updated at the same time.

The lesson of this experience? BAKCUP BACKUP BACKUP!

Now I am off to have a beer and change my underware. What a day!
