The Living Room Face Lift
The living room didn't need much work after the dining room was done.
Moving the large arch and putting in the windows was most of what
needed to be done. But the openings to the stairs and hall looked
really bad. There were doors in those locations at one point. We removed
them some time ago by lifting them off the hinges.
The big problem was that the door casings just look out of place
and not very attractive. So to fix this situation, we removed the
trim and casings and then had to pull down all the slats and plaster
off the inner wall. You can see that being done in the
demolition section if you like.

Once the wall was taken down we also removed two odd quarter rounds
that connected the wall to the ceiling. They were just cosmetic and
looked out of place. We then widened the opening to the stairs and
shifted the opening to the hall just a bit. The top of the openings
went to 80 inches to match the dining to kitchen and liging room to
diningroom openings. This also ligned up with the top of our three
openings between the living room and diningroom. The change really
gave the house a unified look and feel. The new openings are simply
sheetrock wrapped with no trim. This is a very clean look. This entire
process helped make the house feel more open. Putting the sheet rock in
place was a breeze by this time. After all the other rooms we have
done, things have become much easier. It also helped that there was
only the one wall to do and part of the stairs. The end effect looks
great!
